What is acrylic yarn

Acrylic yarn is the trade name of polyacrylonitrile fiber in China. Acrylic yarn has excellent properties, and is known as "synthetic wool" because its properties are similar to those of wool. Since industrial production in 1950, great progress has been made. In the future, China will vigorously develop acrylic fiber production. Although acrylic fibers are commonly referred to as polyacrylonitrile fibers, acrylonitrile (commonly referred to as the first monomer) accounts for only 90% to 94%, the second monomer accounts for 5% to 8%, and the third monomer accounts for 0.3% to 2.0%. This is due to the lack of flexibility and brittleness of fibers made from a single acrylonitrile polymer, and the difficulty of dyeing. In order to overcome these shortcomings of polyacrylonitrile, people use the method of adding a second monomer to make the fiber flexible; Add a third monomer to improve dyeing ability.

Production of acrylic yarn

The raw material for acrylic yarn is cheap propylene, which is a by-product of petroleum cracking. Due to the fact that polyacrylonitrile copolymer only decomposes and does not melt when heated to above 230C, it cannot be melt spun like polyester and nylon fibers, and solution spinning is used instead. Spinning can be done either dry or wet. Dry spinning has a high speed and is suitable for spinning simulated silk fabrics. Very suitable for spinning short fibers, fluffy and soft, suitable for making wool-like fabrics.

2. Performance and use of acrylic yarn

Elasticity: Its elasticity is better, second only to polyester, and about twice higher than nylon. It has good shape retention.

Strength: Although the strength of acrylic fiber is less than that of polyester and nylon, it is 1 to 2.5 times higher than that of wool.

Heat resistance: The softening temperature of the fiber is 190~230C, second only to polyester in synthetic fibers.

Light resistance: The light resistance of acrylic fiber is the best of all synthetic fibers exposed to the open air for one year, with a strength reduction of only 20%.

Acrylic fibers are resistant to acids, oxidants, and general organic solvents, but not to alkalis. The finished acrylic fiber has good bulkiness, warmth retention, soft feel, and good weather resistance, mold resistance, and moth resistance. The warmth retention of acrylic fiber is about 15% higher than that of wool. Acrylic fiber can be blended with wool, and most of the products are used for civilian purposes, such as wool, blankets, knitted sportswear, tarpaulins, curtains, artificial fur, plush, and so on. Acrylic fiber is also the raw material for high-tech carbon fiber products.
